England’s top 10 ‘inch defining moments’ with Paul Ince and Jimmy Bullard

We’re well into the swing of a big summer of football and things are about to ramp up when the knockout stage gets underway this weekend. There’s bound to be blood, sweat and definitely tears. To celebrate our Pay Per Inch promotion where you can get your hands on a brand new TV for the price of its screen size, we thought we would take a look at some of the biggest ‘inch defining’ moments for England during major tournaments. Paul Ince and Jimmy Bullard give their analysis on each of these key moments – it’s fair to say there have been a few times where it all could’ve been so different!

1) Geoff Hurst hits underside of bar v Germany, World Cup 1966

Jimmy says…
It definitely crossed the line, we were all over them at the time anyway but the goal was obviously an inch defining moment. I still reckon we would’ve done them anyway!

Paul says…
It was inches over but that’s still over – not even a debate anymore! We beat them comfortably in the end

2) Gazza is inches away from scoring a golden goal v Germany at Euro 96

Jimmy says…
He had a bit of a waddle, if he didn’t stutter then he may have got his studs on the ball – I just keep thinking about what could’ve been. We deserved to be in that final!

Paul says…
I have seen it so many times and every time I watch it, I keep thinking he is going to score. I still can’t believe he didn’t! Inches away from getting to the final

3) Frank Lampard shot over the line not given v Germany, World Cup 2010

Jimmy says…
How have they not given it?! I watched that when I was away and it ruined my holiday. I could see that was in just watching it on the box, so why couldn’t the ref?! That would’ve made it 2-2 and who knows what would’ve happened!

Paul says…
It wasn’t inches over the line – it was yards! That was a huge moment in the game and one I feel would’ve turned out a lot differently had the right decision been given.

4) Ronaldinho free-kick lobs Seaman v Brazil, World Cup 2002

Jimmy says…
That was nothing short of sensational! I don’t care what anyone says, because Ronaldinho absolutely meant it! The horrible thing is Seaman back peddling because he knows he is bang in trouble!

Paul says…
That was a real bit of class – a great free kick. David’s a good mate and he had absolutely no chance of getting that

5) Gareth Southgate penalty miss v Germany, Euro 96

Jimmy says…
You just look at Gareth and he doesn’t look like a proper footballer. He didn’t look confident at all when he stepped up. I knew he was going to miss as soon as he did! Few inches to the left…. And he still would’ve missed!

Paul says…
I wanted the 6th penalty but Venables told me Gareth was 6th and I was 7th. I was feeling confident to be fair but unfortunately the opportunity never came

6) John Terry hooks clear shot that over the line v Ukraine, Euro 2012

Jimmy says…
It was a big moment in the game but after the Lampard one against Germany we deserved a bit of luck. I still think we would’ve qualified anyway

Paul says…
I don’t think it was over the line – it was a matter of inches but John cleared it out in time. About time a decision went for us anyway

7) Rob Green fails to stop Clint Dempsey shot v US, World Cup 2010

Jimmy says…
(laughs) yeh that was shocking! I know Greeny well and that is very unlike him. I just thought ‘what are you doing you absolute donought?!’

Paul says…
Rob is a top goalkeeper but this kind of thing can happen to anyone. At the time he probably wanted the ground to swallow him up!

8) Phil Neville trips Romanian striker to give away penalty, Euro 2000

Jimmy says…
I would say it was inches away from being a great tackle, but it wasn’t! We were about to scrape through with a draw but young Phil slid in, cleaned him out and then we were out the tournament.

Paul says…
I remember that game well, as I was playing in it. You could see it happening, I’m thinking to myself ‘just stay on your feet, don’t make the tackle’ but he made the challenge and I knew instantly it was a pen! You feel for anyone in that situation

9) Garry McAllister missed penalty versus England in Euro 96

Jimmy says…
I thought we were going to mess it up against the scots at this point! Apparently Uri Geller is allegedly taking responsibility for moving the ball a couple of inches on the spot but I reckon it was just a poor penalty.

Paul says…
I wouldn’t go as far as saying he bottled it – Gary was a top player and the last thing he would do is bottle anything. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say the ball moved slightly before he took the pen. It was an inch defining moment for us though and a massive turning point.

10) Raheem Sterling hits side-netting v Italy, World Cup 2014

Jimmy says…
I was celebrating like mad and was convinced we were 1-0 up – but until the ball hits the back of the onion it’s not a goal! Inches away from going 1-0 up and that would’ve changed our tournament

Paul says…
It was inches wide but I knew it wasn’t in – you see the net ripple and everyone gets excited but I knew at the time he hadn’t scored.
