Merchant found themselves behind in the first minute but went onto dominate the first half and levelled after 35 minutes when Nick Sumpton turned his marker and found the bottom corner from just inside the Spa box. The Greens played some of their best football of the season at the start of the second half but contrived to miss chance after chance. Matty Sill capped an impressive performance when he finally put Merchant ahead on the hour. However, the visitors grabbed two late goals to snatch an unlikley victory.
Tue, 15 Apr 2008 00:00:00 GMT+0100

West Pier Res 2 - 4 Merchant

Merchant got back to winning ways with a fine away victory at West Pier. After dominating the first half, Tom Scales gave Merchant a deserved 40th minute lead with a close range finish after good work from Nicky Sumpton. The hosts levelled shortly after half time but Scales grabbed his second with an effort from 20 yards to restore the Green's advantage. Good approach play by Scales and a delicate back heel from Sumpton set up Jaq Prendergast to slot home a third soon after. Sumpton completed the scoring for Merchant with the goal his performance deserved when he dispossesed the Pier keeper outside the penalty area and found the empty net from a narrow angle. Pier grabbed a consolation late on but the result was never in doubt. Danny Wedge, playing his first game since undergoing knee surgery, Micky Adamson making a rare apperance and Mark Taylor were, along with Sumpton, the star performers.
Sun, 13 Apr 2008 00:00:00 GMT+0100

Merchant 1 - 2 Castle Tavern

Merchant threw away a first half lead to sink to a home defeat to Castle Tavern. Tom Scales played in Phil Coole who slotted Merchant in front after only fifteen minutes. The Greens created few further opportunities to extent their lead and an inept second half performance was punished by two goals from the visitors in the final quarter of the game.
Sun, 09 Mar 2008 00:00:00 GMT+0000

Merchant 4 - 5 Heslerton

A brave second half fightback by the Greens was not enough to secure them a result against top of the table Heslerton. Despite enjoying the better chances in the first half, Merchant found themselves 3-0 down after 40 minutes. Nick Turley's right wing corner was fumbled into his own net by the visiting goalkeeper just before half time as the Greens set about making an unlikely comeback...
Sun, 02 Mar 2008 00:00:00 GMT+0000

Scholars FC 1 - 3 Merchant

'Mr Versatile', Nicky Sumpton helped Merchant to three points with a goal in each half at lowly Scholars.
Sun, 24 Feb 2008 00:00:00 GMT+0000

Oxtoby returns to boost Greens

Matty Oxtoby is set to make a timely return to the Merchant squad for Sunday's McCain Cup play off game against Rileys. Versatile Oxtoby, 21, has made only one competitive appearance so far this season but should this week be lining up alongside Rhys Howell in the centre of the Green's defence. Merchant also welcome Neil Fryirs, who has been in fine goal scoring form of late, back into the squad after his recovery from a chest infection. Andy Waggitt is also expected to line up alongside brother Spud, Merchant's latest acquisition. The Greens will however have to make do without form player Tom Chandler who is unavailable.
Thu, 07 Feb 2008 00:00:00 GMT+0000

Merchant 6 - 0 Blacksmiths FC

A rampant Merchant made it three wins on the bounce as they crushed second placed Blacksmiths at Oliver's Mount. Nicky Sumpton registered his first goals for the club, bagging a hat-trick, as did Tom Scales who notched his eighth goal in his last three appearances. Danny Wedge put his injury woes behind him, finally making his competitive debut and Spud Waggitt played his part in helping the Greens keep their first clean sheet since October 2006. Following their slow start, three wins out of the last three games has seen Merchant start to rise steadily up the league table.
Mon, 28 Jan 2008 00:00:00 GMT+0000

Spa 4 - 5 Merchant

Merchant bagged their second consecutive win with a 5 star performance away at Spa. Despite falling behind twice in the first half, the Greens battled back to lead 3 - 2 at the interval. Tom Chandler continued his recent run of creating goals from the centre back position, floating an inch perfect free kick from deep onto Ady Colley's head for Merchant's first goal after 20 minutes. Jaq Prendergast set up Neil Fryirs to curl home a second equaliser and minutes later Colley was at it again, picking up a loose ball 40 yards from goal and firing home a superb long range effort. After the break Merchant played some good counter attacking football and moved further ahead when Neil Fryirs registered his second of the game. Ex Scarborough man Matty Perry capped his debut with the fifth just after an hour before Spa pulled two goals back late on. Tom Chandler was the man of the match putting in a performance described by boss Mick Pillar as 'one of the best I have ever seen in a Green shirt'.
Tue, 15 Jan 2008 00:00:00 GMT+0000
