8th September, 2008
Saturday 6th September saw Hesketh Casuals players present and former gather to celebrate their 50th Anniversary since their maiden game. In total, around 320 people attended the succesful event at Southport's new Floral Hall as players, committee members, partners and associates enjoyed an excellent evening of fine food and drink, entertainment and even more drink.
Club President John Woodhouse opened proceedings with his speech, thanking all for attending and picking out club Chairman Peter Hames for all his tireless efforts for organising the event with a little help from family and friends. It was then passed over to the Chairman himself to deliver a fine speech and awarding lifelong Casuals player and member Jim Bell the prestigous award of Clubman of All Years. Jimmy Bell played in the first ever Hesketh Casuals game and he is always in attendance every Saturday to show his support and make drinks for the players.
Once the excellent food had been served the guests were treated to a hilarous 45 minutes of comedy from Liverpudlian Gary, which went down extremely well, as did the singer for the evening.
It was over to 1st team manager Baz Todd to reveal the winners of the raffle and also conduct a successful auction in which Cassies legend and miracle hair growth promotor Steve Shaw outbid all to a TV with a winning bid of Â
All in all the amateur team from Southport put on a wonderful event and the support shown by the sheer numbers clearly demonstrates the importance of keeping together a local side. For the last 50 years committee members and former players have strived to keep the club alive and the popularity of this event was pure testament to the strength of Hesketh Casuals AFC.
