This sunday saw Falcon Lodge start there first defence of the Aston Villa Cup, and what a cracker it was.
Falcon Lodge where away from home to newly promoted Midian who produced a fine display against coleshill last week putting 8 past the division 2 veteran side. Meeting a new team in the leaque is always an interesting game but with this being Falcons first title defence game made it all the more interesting.
The first half seemed all but a blur as Midian started excellently passing and moving the ball and working there way through a still in bed Lodge side. Midian whent 1 up within the first 5 minutes of game to the bewildment of lodge team, then another and then another and then another. Midians fine display of passing and long ball tactics saw them punishing the Wanderers and ending the half 4-0 up in the first half with lodge getting a late consolation goal from Terry Cartwright just before time ending the first half at 4-1. Confused and dazed and looking almost certain to be knocked out in the opening game of the cup Falcon Lodge took a step back to look at where they were going wrong.
Midian almost rubbing there hands in glee came out for the second half looking to finish the job and carry on the where they left off but the wanderers had other idea's.
The Wanderers finally into there rhythm started to work openings with crisp passing and great interlink play scoring there second in the opening 5, after this the flood gates officially opened.
Relentless pressure from The lodge now began to take its toll on a weakening Midian Defence with Terry Cartwright Clinically lashing in his second of the game.
Another smooth move down the right saw a ball whipped in and the Midian defence scurrying to clear there lines only for the ball to break loose to Danny Wilks on the edge of the area. Last weeks muppet of the week made no mistakes this time lashing the ball into the top right hand corner leaving the Wanderers only a goal behind.
Wave after wave of Lodge pressure finally took its toll with midian giving away a penalty only for Terry Cartwright to step up to wrap up his hat-trick and more importantly level the game and take it into extra time
Scratching there heads at what had just happened the Midian players came out with there heads down and tails between there legs only for the Wanderers to continue with the onslaught.
Ryan Stokes rose like a salmon and buried like an undertaker with 2 sublime headers in each side of injury time. The final nail in the coffin coming from Man OF The Match Terry Cartwright who scored the lodges 7th with a 35 yard curler which the keeper didnt have a prayer of stopping.
Coming from 4-0 down and winning 7-4 to a good side has to go down as one of the wanderers greatest wins. The cup run continues.
As they say it aint over till the fat lady sings.
