29th February, 2008

Digica comfortably confirmed their place in the cup final tonight with a defensively solid display against mediocre Grosvenor. Digica arrived as favourites and although Grosvenor put up a gallant first half display the prospect of a final place against Premium never really looked in doubt. The scene was set in a changing room that only just fit Bobbles and Ollie in with the rest of the team squeezed around and with a ban on Chavy mobile phone music the Stone Roses back catalogue provided Digica with the boost they needed. As the teams took to the pitch the stadium began to fill and the tension was there to be seen in each and every player. Digica kicked off and were immediately on the attack with jacko being a constant threat down the left. 2 minutes in and it was Tivey who broke away down the left put a cross in that was just too far for the oncoming Booth. A freak attack from Grosvenor saw Daz apparently handle the ball outside the box and for a moment one whole digi breath was held waiting for the ref to reach into his pocket, but alas just a free kick was awarded that was wastefully spurned. Digica turned up the heat and saw long range efforts from Marshal, Jacko and Tivey fly just wide before a through ball from Cowling found Booth unmarked in the box only to be tumble to the floor but to no avail. Digicas defence had remained solid with Bobbles win every header and Allan crunching anything in his path. However, as the half time whistle blue Digica found themselves tied and trotted back to the changing rooms for a briefing from French.
Whatever French had said must have done the job because after 5 minutes of the restart Digica had taken the lead. A non descript foul on the half way line gave the digimen a free kick which seemed the perfect opportunity for a floater into the box off the foot of Savage. However, the wise old footballer saw a gaping hole in the Grosvenor defence and place a diagonal ball onto the foot of Booth who blasted past the reach of the keeper into the top of the net. Digica held firm as Grosvenor started to attack a little and a ferocious tackle from Lee saw him thanks by a thump in the unmentionables by the 8 foot number 10, receiving a yellow card for his misplaced uppercut. This signalled the first change as Mckay cam on for Cowling and immediately got stuck in spreading pass after pass. Governors biggest threat came with a misplaced back pass from Savage and as the Grosvenor forward side stepped the on rushing keeper it was thanks to Bobbles presence that the forward spooned it wide and Digicas clean sheet remained intact. On 60 minutes ODea entered the fray replacing Booth and 10 minutes late Savage and to be replaced by Wadlow, limping off with a touch of cramp. With 10 minutes to go Marshal doubled Digicas lead with a swivel shot inside the Grosvenor box and the digimen looked set for the final. In the dying minutes it seemed the mental mantle that had been handed from Booth to Savage had once again been passed on, this time to Champagne Emmerson who had to be restrained by Mckay as a flair up with Governors number 4 hit melting point. The usually calm Emmerson was uncontrollable and it took a menacing stare from the Gaffa to bring Mental Mark back down. As the final whistle blew their seemed to be a sombre atmosphere in the air, the Digimen where through, as expected, and now Premium lie in wait. Both teams are still on for the double and with the final and the last game of the season between these two this season could go right to the wire. Digica face the unusually named Beercalona this Sunday who come to Clifton not having won since the 03rd of December 2007, and having only won three games this season should not prove to much an opposition for Digica. However, Digica come into the game missing Savage, Allan and Gaffa French but surely have the personal to keep on track for the league title.
