17th February, 2008

Confusion was in abundance this Sunday morning for the Digimen, will the game be on? Are we playing at highfields? Why is Gordon playing right wing? Where the hell is Ali Savage? Has anyone seen Lee? what formation are we playing? but most important of all, was that REALLY nick in the green shirt saving the penalty?
Some questions will remain unsolved but i can confirm that this week, following a mysterious back injury to Daz part way through the game, Nick used his Jedi powers to keep Digica in the game, until the second corner that is.
Clearly Wadlow was wearing his superman pants in this unconvincing win for Digica for when the hero phone rang, he didn't let it slip to voicemail and answered with balls.
The game started with Southwold taking control and causing trouble in the Digica box, creating a few chances which could have easily granted them the lead. Frustration crept in the Demolition squad and, partly sue to a pitch resembling an ice rink, began comitting a little too much to the tackles resulting in the removal of Booths studs, a fairly crude attempt at brain surgery on patient O'dea and a few more ankle breakers on Booth (who probably derserved them).
After 10 minutes, Digica woke up and started creating chances of their own. Booth was busy, Cowling a-prowling, Emmo had a go, harry was pottering, the field marshall was commanding and chris took the piss. Despite gaining momentum, Digica could not carve out too many chances, the best falling to the General, who meandered through the Southwold defence like the amazon through Brasil only to blast his shot wide with his left boot. Tivey also found space in the box, but his powerful header from a corner was the wrong side of the crossbar. Half time came and the sides were equal at 0-0 each having chances but with the sun in their favour and a slight breeze behind them, the Digimen still fancied 3 points.
One fairly significant problem was that the new strategy of taking a 10 minute power nap at half time seemed to backfire as many Digimen did not actually wake up until 15 mins into the 2nd half - and by that time they were 1-0 down. The penalty came first along with Wadlow's super hand but the resulting corners were not dealt with well enough and Southwold's striker was sniffing around on the edge of the box to smash the ball into the net.
Digica behind for only the second time in the season.
Bossman French took drastic (but effective action) and replaced Atherley with himself and re-jigged the team into a 3-5-2 formation to try and get the goal back. The formation was however not as effective as the confusion that seemed to flow through Digica (and to their advantage Southwold too) as no one really knew who was playing where. In doubt, everyone took a default attacking position and soon the game was 1-1. A miss hit through ball by Booth to Marshall eventually found Harry P in the box, the digifundas charm on the keeper was far more impressive than the shot, which trickled in passed the bemused number 1.
Digica gained momentum and could smell 3 points in the air, pushing forward opened the game up and could have easily resulted in another Southwold goal but when you're chasing the title, and with premium in fine form, you have to go for it.
Fortune certainly favours the brave.
A moment of genius from the smiling assassin Tivey who's superior pace and fitness allowed him to hop, skip and jump passed the Southwold back line. The only way to stop him proved to be illegal and it was Digica's turn to be tested from 12 yards.
Emmerson took the ball with confidence, the crowd held their breath and French and Burden shared a glance that said (if there weren't so many men around i'd hold your hand). Emmerson dispatched the ball with conviction to the keeper's right and the rest, as they say is history.
Digimen face a tough test against a surprisingly bottom placed Grosvenor on Thursday, fighting to stay in the league and with a chance of a cup final, they will by no means be a push over. A better performance required from the Blues if they wish to have a go at Premium in the final
