5th February, 2008

98 days ago, as team Digica left the pitch after making one of the greatest comebacks since Churchill decided it was time to use Hitlers moustache for his brilliant Charlie Chaplin fancy dress costume , questions were asked whether Digica could maintain their flying start to the season. Having just beaten Forum 90 4-3 the opponents were assured that there is lots of football left to be played this season and it will be interesting to see where both teams stand when the re-match comes around in the spring. Well, the rematch came around and Digica now find themselves even further a field with an 8 point lead and with 2 games in hand. Anyone would think that the surprise early season pace setters would now have gained some respect, but alas, they have now been crowned the shittiest team in the league, a team that any self respecting football fan knows, confidently, will falter in a higher division.
Digica arrived at their possible new home Highfields looking to make it 10 wins out of 11 in their hunt for the league title. On the back of an unconvincing but defensively solid 2-0 win at Empire last week, Digica, under the watchful gaze of coach Rushby, hoped to end Forums 4 game winning streak and return to the form which saw them go on an early season 9 game winning streak. The wind was hurling again but Digica looked to have the advantage, opting to play against it for the first half. It was Forum, however, who came out if the stalls the fastest, testing the Digiman defence with long balls which swirled in the early morning wind. The back four of Wadlow, Burden, Savage and Martin with the ever-present Bowler guarding the sticks, however, remained solid. Digica struggled to get anything going and it was Forum who produced the early scares, seeing two fine saves from Bowler, one from point blank range, and the scores remained level. However, minutes from half time Marshall bundled his way through the Forum box and flicked a delicate shot passed the oncoming Forum keeper to see Digica one up at half time.
Minutes after the restart though, it was all square as a unmarked Forum man crept in at the front post to flick a header past Bowler. Digica, however, with the wind behind them stepped up their game and created attack after attack. Finally a through ball found Tivey all alone and he slotted by the on rushing Forum Keeper, 2-1 and Digica looked to be getting control of the game. With 20 minutes to go Jacko passed the ball across the Forum box and from out of nowhere came the on form Booth to slash home Digicas third, putting the blues out of sight. The came continued and Digica seemed settled, so settled in fact that savage decided to become a new centre forward, making consistent forages forward, but with Digimen unable to understand the southern cries his explorations forward were unfruitful. At the back though Savage lived up to his name, hacking down anything in sight and with minutes to go Forums number 9 moved into the box only to be royally dumped to the ground by the on rushing Londoner. A stone-wall penalty, much to alis dismay, but at last the Forum forward had actually been touched before falling over this time. However, as luck would have it the penalty struck both posts before falling to the feet of Savage, who else, and punted to safety as the final whistle blew.
So, the Digimen remain on track and with Premium beating Calverton Digica are joint top, six points clear and with a game in hand over Premium. Next week Bestwood and the Digimen need to be on their game if they are to get another 3 points. Bestwood come to Highfields on the back of a 6 game unbeaten run and having only lost twice this season, both against the top two, look set to provide Digica with their biggest test of the year so far. Come on the Blues!! Not literally.
