The legendary Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts started life as a small event on farmer Michael Eavis' Pilton Farm' near Glastonbury in Somerset when he opened his gates to friends, travellers and hippies back in 1970 charging just one pound entrance fee and distributing free milk all weekend. Now, the 150,000 capacity festival attracts the very biggest names in music such as Oasis, Radiohead, Muse, Paul McCartney, Coldplay, The White Stripes to headline its main Pyramid Stage along with incredible line-ups on The Other Stage, Jazz World, Dance Village, Acoustic and Cabaret Arena's and the John Peel Stage for upcoming acts. Glastonbury isn't just about the music though, set in 1,000 acres of the Vale Of Avalon, the area is steeped in mythology and spirituality with the famous Green Fields providing an alternative centre for the festival alongside the new 40 acre Shangri-La area which promises to be packed full of weird and wonderful surprises complete with 12 separate stages and a license til 6am on Friday and Saturday nights. Glastonbury also donates some of its profit to support various charities such as Oxfam, Greenpeace and Water Aid.
