Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell made Rotherham United goalkeeper Mike Pollitt his first signing of the summer of 2005.

The 33-year-old penned a two-year deal with the Latics and was delighted to get the chance to play in the Premiership.

"I've been in discussions with Wigan for a while now and there's never been any doubt in my mind that this was a challenge I was going to accept," Pollitt told Wigan's official website.

"Obviously leaving Rotherham is wrench, particularly as I've had so many good times there and the people have been so good to me.

"However, at this stage in my career I couldn't turn down the opportunity to join a club like Wigan Athletic, especially now they're in the top flight.

"In John Filan they already have a top-class keeper and for me he's one of the best around. I know I'll have to fight for my place in the first team but I'm prepared to be patient and will look forward to working closely with Filan and Gary Walsh to make sure the team does well this year."

Pollitt played 269 League games during two spells with the Millers. He started his career as a trainee at Manchester United before going on to enjoy time with Lincoln City, Darlington and Chesterfield.

In his first season as a Wigan player he made thirty appearances, and will be hoping to add to that tally in the 06/07 campaign. However, the arrival of Chris Kirkland limited his chances, and in November 2006 he joined Ipswich Town and later Burnley on a short-term loan deals.
