Michael Brown

Michael Brown joined Fulham in January 2006, two years after a move to Tottenham Hotspur. He had started his career at Manchester City as a trainee, and he made 71 appearances for the Maine Road side.

During his time at City, he was sent out on loan to Hartlepool, Portsmouth and Sheffield United. In January 2000, he made the move to the Blades permanent for £400,000 and soon became an integral part of their team.

When Tottenham Hotspurcame calling just under four years later, the temptation at a second chance in the Barclaycard Premiership was too much for Brown, and as he had just a few months left on his contract, Sheffield United had no option but to accept.

He made his debut for Tottenham in the 2-1 win over Liverpool at White Hart Lane in February, and scored his first, and the first goal in the 4-4 thriller with Leicester City.

In the 2004/05 season, his first full campaign for Spurs, he made 34 appearances and scored twice, becoming a fixture in Martin Jol's midfield. However, Jol spent heavily on midfielders in the summer and Borwn found himself struggling to hold down a first team place in the 2005/06 season as Jermaine Jenas was preferred. His move to Fulham gave the 29-year-old a greater prospect of first-team football, with new coach Chris Coleman saying: "He will add a new dimension to the midfield, which will improve our options and add much needed strength and depth to the squad."

However, Brown's first half-season at Fulham was marred by a horrific tackle on former Spurs team-mate Sean Davis during a match with Portsmouth. Many took this to be a deliberate attempt to injure the Pompey man, but Brown denied this.

Although there were one or two dubious tackles in 2006/07, Brown mainly stayed controversy-free. However, at the end of the season it became clear that new boss Lawrie Sanchez did not see Brown as key to his plans and in July 2007 he moved on to Wigan Athletic, where he enjoyed an impressive first season.
