Spanish striker Diego Tristan started his career at Real Betis and then Mallorca, where he made his name in the 1999/2000 season. A potential move to Real Madrid fell through due to a change of regime at the Bernabeu, and he joined Deportivo la Coruna instead in 2000.
He became one of Europe's top strikers at Depor, impressing in their Champions League campaigns and earning his first Spanish cap in 2001. However, an injury cut short his campaign at the 2002 World Cup and cost him his leading role with his club to Roy Makaay.
After that, his career went into freefall, and and after a few disappointing seasons, he was released by Depor in 2006. Unremarkable spells back at Mallorca and in Italy with Livorno did not improve his situation and he was released again in the summer of 2008.
He remained without a club until October 2008 when he was signed up until the end of the season by West Ham United.
