After impressing in his native Portugal with Imortal, C.D. Feirense and Belenenses, defender Pele signed for Southampton in 2006 for a fee believed to be in the region of £1million.

He rejected the advances of several Premier League clubs to join the Saints in a bid to play more football, and in his first season he made 37 appearances, scoring once.

His impressive form attracted the interest of West Brom, whom he signed for in August 2007.

His first season at The Hawthornes proved a great success as he played 21 games, and he will be looking to continue such fine form in 2008/09.
