Leicester loan not in Vellios plans

10th February 2012

Apostolos Vellios will not be joining Leicester City on loan despite falling down the Everton pecking order recently.

The ambitious Championship side had been preparing a loan offer for the 20-year-old Greek, with a number of first-team forwards currently unavailable at the Walkers Stadium.

But with former Blue Jermaine Beckford winning an appeal against his sending-off at Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend, subsequently seeing his three-match ban quashed, Foxes boss Nigel Pearson has cooled his interest in Vellios, who will continue to fight for his Goodison Park place.

Villa rebuffed in Keane request

10th February 2012

Aston Villa today failed to extend the loan deal of Robbie Keane from LA Galaxy after the Major League Soccer side rebuffed their request to increase his stay.

The ex-Wolves striker’s current deal expires after Villa’s trip to Wigan on February 25 and he is due to return to the US to begin pre-season training with the Los Angeles club.

Galaxy begin their season proper on March 10 with a home game against Real Salt Lake but Villa were optimistic of striking an agreement with their counterparts across the Atlantic to allow Keane to feature in the claret and blues’ trip to Blackburn seven days earlier.

Madrid make first move for van Persie

10th February 2012

Real Madrid are ready to make the first moves for Arsenal captain Robin van Persie.

Influential Spanish paper Marca says Real coach Jose Mourinho tried to sign Van Persie while in charge at previous club Inter Milan, and the Bernabeu giants will still go for him even if the ex-Chelsea boss leaves, as has been reported, this summer.

Van Persie has been hailed as ‘world class’ by Gunners manager Arsene Wenger because of his brilliant form this season and the Dutchman is the club’s prize asset.

Arsenal are keen to negotiate a new deal with Van Persie, whose current contract expires in 2013, but the striker may wait until he discovers their long term ambition.
