Bolton boss Owen Coyle confirmed the move to get United States defender Tim Ream in from New York Red Bulls is at an advanced stage after the 3-0 defeat to Manchester United.
Gary Cahill is on the verge of completing his move to Chelsea, with Ream set to replace him at the Reebok.
“Do you ever want to lose a player of Gary Cahill’s quality? No,” said Coyle.
“But circumstances have brought it about and we wish him well.
“He is an outstanding player and an outstanding young man.
“Hopefully I can bring someone in, which we are very close to doing.”

Liverpool are considering a January move to sign Swansea City attacker Scott Sinclair after a succession of glowing scouting reports left Anfield boss Kenny Dalglish readying a potential bid for the former Chelsea man.
Dalglish has been monitoring a number of prospective attacking additions as the Scot looks to beef up Liverpool’s fire-power after seeing his Merseyside club struggle to find the back of the net. That need to bring in another forward has been accentuated by Luis Suarez being handed a lengthy ban and Andy Carroll’s continued inability to find his feet almost a year since his £35m move from Newcastle United.
Scott Sinclair spent five years trying to make the grade at Chelsea, being sent out on loan moves to no fewer than six sides before the Bath born adaptable forward opted to make a £500k move to South Wales and hasn’t looked back since. The 22 year old knocked in 27 goals in his first season to help Brendan Rodgers’ into the top flight via the play-offs.

Sky Sports sources understand Dimitar Berbatov is travelling for talks over a return to Bayer Leverkusen, while there is also interest from Bayern Munich and Anzhi Makhachkala.
The Manchester United striker has fallen down the rankings in Sir Alex Ferguson’s plans and, with his current contract set to expire in the summer, he has been linked with a move.
Berbatov said in December he had no plans to leave Old Trafford, but he was on Sunday spotted taking a flight to Frankfurt, where he was expected to hold discussions with Leverkusen.
There has been talk of United offering the 30-year-old a 12-month contract extension, but there is also interest from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and wealthy Russian club Anzhi.

Bolton boss boss Owen Coyle is ready to swoop for Tottenham’s Giovani Dos Santos in a £4million deal.
Coyle has opened talks for the Mexican – who will be allowed to leave by Spurs chief Harry Redknapp – and Wanderers want to talk the young attacker into staying in England.
Coyle has been after Dos Santos for years and tried to take him to Burnley when he was in charge there.
Spanish giants Sevilla have also made an offer for Dos Santos, 22, but their bid of £3.4m has fallen short of the asking price.

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is ready to test Tottenham with a £10million offer for unsettled Jermain Defoe.
Dalglish is looking to shake up his attack this month after Liverpool’s faltering form has left them struggling to finish in the top four.
The proven scoring record of Defoe would add a new dimension to the Anfield attack – and Liverpool hope to agree a fee with Spurs despite the Londoners’ title ambitions. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp wants a new striker himself and watched Marseille’s Loic Remy yesterday.
If Redknapp adds a new face, that would push Defoe further down the pecking order and nearer the White Hart Lane exit.
