Manchester United are monitoring Gary Cahill’s on-off move to Chelsea.
Bolton had agreed a £7million fee with the Londoners for the England centre-back.
But the 26-year-old’s representatives have failed to agree personal terms at a first meeting.
Chelsea are offering £70,000 a week, while Cahill is seeking £100,000 a week.
Now United could make a move to bolster their injury-hit defence.

Sir Alex Ferguson will look to finally land long term target Wesley Sneijder this month after Inter Milan reportedly placed a £25m price tag on the Dutch playmaker.
The Old Trafford boss has been linked with a move for the 27 year old for the best part of a year and will now look to his board to finance a bid matching the Serie A side’s valuation.
Sneijder has seen his Nerazzurri side have an up and down season that has left the Italian giants eight points off top spot, currently held by city rivals AC, and this has left the former Ajax and Real Madrid man considering his options.
Man United and Inter Milan were believed to have discussed the possibility of a move for Sneijder in the summer and some reports had stated that the player’s £200k a week wage demands were a factor in Ferguson going cool on a bid but now the Scot is said to be ready to re-open talks.

Aston Villa are interested in signing Didier Drogba in a move that could pave the way for the shock January exit of Darren Bent, Goal.com has learned.
The Midlands club have expressed an interest in swooping for the Chelsea veteran, who turns 34 in March.
Drogba is out of contract in the summer and talks over an extension at Stamford Bridge have reached a stalemate, with the Londoners unwilling to exceed the one-year deal currently on the table.
However, Villa have indicated they would be willing to give Drogba the two-year contract that he wants from Chelsea.
Although Villa manager Alex McLeish has admitted he has limited funds to spend in this month’s transfer window, the sale of club-record signing Bent would free up the cash to match Drogba’s current salary of around £120,000-a-week.
