Stoke City are preparing a straight £3million bid for Middlesbrough captain Gary O’Neil. Manager Tony Pulis failed with a bid for the former Portsmouth midfielder in January and has denied offering a swap deal with Republic of Ireland international Liam Lawrence.

Liverpool defender Emiliano Insua is expected to join Fiorentina over the next 48 hours after the clubs agreed on a £5million fee. The Argentine left-back, 21, has been the subject of various offers from the Italians but a deal is close to conclusion. Fellow left-backs Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena have already left the Merseysiders.

West Ham are in talks with Olympiakos about selling Alessandro Diamanti and Radoslav Kovac but are determined to keep Scott Parker. The Hammers, who are £90million in debt, are looking to revamp their squad under new boss Avram Grant. They are close to landing several transfer targets including Mexican winger Pablo Barrera. But West Ham also want to move on several stars to generate funds for new signings.

Chelsea will step up their pursuit of Fernando Torres after sensing his latest injury setback could enhance their prospects of prising him away from Anfield. Tests in Spain confirmed yesterday that Torres had torn a thigh muscle in last Sunday’s World Cup final, and Liverpool’s medical staff will fly out to examine him in the next 48 hours before handing him fitness guidelines for his forthcoming holiday. Initial estimates of a three-week recovery period left new manager Roy Hodgson pondering whether to try to rush him back for the start of the new season or allow him time to build up his strength and fitness on the training pitch.
