Celtic plot move for Newcastle star

Celtic are chasing Newcastle keeper Steve Harper. The Scottish club are ready to make a move for the Geordie stopper if they can offload Polish international Artur Boruc. Celtic sources have admitted that Harper is a target as new boss Neil Lennon looks to reshape his squad. Harper is an influential figure on and of the pitch at St James’ Park and is hugely popular with the Tyneside fans. Celtic have just recruited former Newcastle coach Alan Thompson, who may have recommended the Easington-born Harper.

Wigan splash the cash on Boselli

Wigan will make Argentinian striker Mauro Boselli their record signing today – after the highly-rated hit man headed to England to put pen to paper. Boselli is flying in to complete a stunning £5.8million move after boss Roberto Martinez and chairman Dave Whelan thrashed out terms and also sorted out a deal with his agent. The Estudiantes star, who narrowly missed out on Diego Maradona’s World Cup squad, qualifies to come into the country without a work permit as he holds an Italian passport.

Wolves in for Dindane

Wolves are weighing up a fresh bid for Ivory Coast international striker Aruna Dindane. The 29-year-old Lens striker, who spent last season on-loan at Portsmouth, was thought to have joined the Qatar-based club Lekhwiya in May but he now claims that deal did not go through and that has alerted Wolves boss Mick McCarthy who tried to sign him last month. McCarthy has already added Jelle Van Damme, Steven Fletcher, Steven Mouyokolo and Stephen Hunt since the end of the season and is close to sealing a £2million deal for Nantes midfielder Guirane N’Daw.

Schwarzer set for Arsenal deal

Arsene Wenger is set to win his battle for Mark Schwarzer – after going back with a fresh £3.5million bid. Aussie keeper Schwarzer, 37, is aware of Arsenal’s interest and has told Fulham he wants to quit Craven Cottage. It has left Fulham boss Roy Hodgson resigned to losing Schwarzer as Arsenal close in on their top keeper target, as first revealed in Mirror Sport on May 15. Wenger sees Schwarzer as the experienced keeper he needs to steady his defence and also not block the progress of his youngsters coming through the ranks.

City given permission to talk to Silva

Manchester City have been given permission to talk to Valencia’s £30million-rated winger David Silva. SunSport revealed last month that the 24-year-old Spain international was a top summer target for City boss Roberto Mancini. Javier Gomez, deputy chairman of the cash-strapped Spaniards, said: “We have permitted City to talk to the player but have not reached an agreement and have not talked about a fee.”
