Newcastle manager Chris Hughton wants Arsenal’s 19-year old Henri Lansbury to boost his squad numbers before the North-East club’s return to the top tier of English football. Lansbury had an impressive spell at Watford last season, appearing 38 times and with money being tight on Tyneside, Hughton sees the England Under-21 international as an ideal loan signing. The Toon boss has also looked at Vladimir Weiss, Danny Welbeck, Jack Wilshire and Tom Cleverley as potential loan signings.

Big spending Manchester City are weighing up a move for USA midfielder Landon Donovan. Mega-rich City watched the LA Galaxy midfielder during the World Cup and were hugely impressed by his loan spell at Everton last season. City are determined to rebuild their squad this summer as they look to complete a £20m deal for Barcelona outcast Yaya Toure.

New Inter Milan boss Rafael Benitez is ready to risk the wrath of his old club Liverpool by trying to wrestle Milan Jovanovic from them. Serbian international striker Jovanovic, 29, agreed to join Liverpool this summer on a Bosman after talks in January. But Jovanovic is having second thoughts about switching from Standard Liege to Anfield since Benitez left. One of Jovanovic’s main motives for going to Merseyside was to work with Benitez.

Joe Cole is to be offered £3million a year to join Serie A giants AC Milan. The England midfielder, 29, is a free agent after being released by Chelsea and is also a target for Premier League rivals Arsenal and Tottenham – but he is said to be interested in a move abroad. According to Corriere Dello Sport, England boss Fabio Capello recommended the player as a good buy to his close pal AC Milan chief Adriano Galliani. The three-year £9m deal, worth £60,000 a week, is actually £20,000 a week less than Cole was on at Chelsea before his contract ran out.

Tottenham are rumoured to be ready to make an offer for Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick and are willing to offer Russian forward Roman Pavlyuchenko in order to tempt Sir Alex Ferguson into allowing the former White Hart Lane man to make a shock return to the club. Harry Redknapp reportedly moved to quash speculation of a move for the England international a couple of months back but many have seen this as a deliberate attempt to try to drive down any asking price for a player who has not been in the best of form of late. The Spurs boss made similar claims when first asked about his interest in Joe Cole, a player that he has now actively claimed to be trying to snare.

Harry Redknapp has tried to gazump Arsenal in the fight for Joe Cole. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has put together a package which they believe can lure the England midfielder to White Hart Lane ahead of their north London rivals. Redknapp is a huge fan of Cole and has urged Levy to sign his former West Ham protege after the 28-year-old was released by Chelsea. Levy does not want to go above the current £60,000-a-week wage structure.

Manchester City are pressing ahead with their interest in Lazio left back Aleksandar Kolarov after his move to Real Madrid stalled. Sportsmail revealed last week Lazio had lined up Portsmouth’s Nadir Belhadj as Kolarov’s replacement but fully expected the Serb to follow Jose Mourinho to Madrid. However, Real have offered £12million for the 24-year-old – well short of Lazio’s £22m valuation.

West Bromwich Albion are ready to step up their interest in Sunderland goalkeeper Marton Fulop. Sportsmail revealed Albion’s interest last month and Fulop has since rejected an offer to return to Manchester City where he had a spell on loan last season.

Burnley hope to be given the green light to tie up a £1million deal for Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp today. Sharp, 24, is also being tracked by Leeds United and Doncaster Rovers, where he had a successful loan stint last season. But the relegated Clarets have lodged the highest bid and, having given Sharp the weekend to think the move over, they hope to tie a deal up this week.
