Real fight off City Higuain chase

Real Madrid’s sporting director Jorge Valdano has said that he would like Argentinian striker Gonzalo Higuain to spend the rest of his career with the Spanish giants. Higuain has been in excellent form this season and hit a hat-trick in last night’s 4-1 victory over Real Valladolid to take his tally to 21 goals in 27 games so far this season. Manchester City were reported to be closely monitoring the 22 year-old’s faltering contract extension talks at the Bernebeu in preparation for making a summer bid to capture both the striker and Real Madrid team-mate Fernando Gago.

Pompey striker puts himself in the shop window

Portsmouth striker Frederic Piquionne has issued a come-and-get-me plea to Premier League clubs, telling French newspaper L’Equipe that he wants to continue his career in England. The 31-year-old striker has impressed in a struggling side this season, on loan from French giants Lyon but looks set to leave Fratton Park when his deal is up, with Pompey all but certain to be heading for the Championship. Piquionne said: “I do not want to return to Lyon to sit on the bench… I want to enjoy my last few months at Portsmouth and hopefully catch the eye of other English clubs.” The 6.2ft striker is out of contract at Lyon at the end of this season and in recent months has been linked with summer moves to Blackburn and Birmingham.

Villa eye United shot stopper

Aston Villa are weighing up a move for Manchester United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak. The Pole wants more game time and Villa want competition for 39- year-old Brad Friedel and his compatriot Brad Guzan. The 27-year-old has made less than 30 Premier League appearances for United since joining United in the summer of 2006. And he also faces competition from Ben Foster, who manager Sir Alex Ferguson has tipped to be the future England No 1.
