Birmingham central defender Martin Taylor is in talks to join Newcastle on loan for the rest of the season. Taylor has also had talks with Leicester, but they have pulled out of the race to sign him. The centre-half caused controversy in 2008 when his tackle on Eduardo saw the Arsenal striker suffer a broken leg and ankle. McLeish said: “Newcastle approached his people and said they would be interested in a loan deal.”

He maintained his interest in Wilshere, 18, once he took over at the Reebok and held talks with Gunners chief Arsene Wenger after their two games last week. Coyle was worried the bad blood between the clubs could harm his chances of signing Wilshere – but the Emirates manager has stuck to his word and the youngster will move to Bolton on loan.
