West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo is preparing a £750,000 bid for Stoke defender Leon Cort. Di Matteo is ready to make an offer the for ex-Crystal Palace centre-half as he attempts to boost his Championship promotion challenge. But Albion will face competition from Newcastle, Middlesbrough and Ipswich for the 30-year-old, who is ready to leave Stoke before the transfer window slams shut. Cort has not made a Premier League appearance for the Potters this season, but Stoke will only sanction a permanent move.

David Bentley has been offered a Premier League lifeline by struggling West Ham. New Hammers owners David Gold and David Sullivan have made an enquiry about taking the ottenham outcast on loan for the rest of the season with a view to a permanent deal. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who knocked back attempts by Everton and Manchester City to sign him on loan last summer, is desperate to recoup all of his £15million outlay. However, Levy has struggled to drum up a deal for in Bentley in the January transfer window as Sunderland, Aston Villa and Everton have all shown an interest, but none of them want to meet Tottenham’s price.

Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara will be Avram Grant’s first loan signing following the Premier League’s decision to partially lift Portsmouth’s transfer embargo. The south coast club were given the lifeline after they proved to the Premier League that they no longer owed cash to other clubs. Outstanding payments to Udinese over the transfer of Sulley Muntari in May 2005 have been restructured to the Serie A club’s satisfaction. It means Grant will be able to sign loan players or free transfers.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is ready to let Jack Wilshere join Bolton – after a grovelling apology from Owen Coyle. Coyle and Wenger clashed last Wednesday after the Bolton boss angrily accused Arsenal defender William Gallas of making a tackle ‘akin to assault’ on his midfielder Mark Davies. It caused bad blood between the clubs, threatened Wenger’s good relationship with Coyle and put Bolton’s attempts to snap up Wilshere on loan in jeopardy.

Tottenham Hotspur are attempting to hijack Eidur Gudjohnsen’s transfer to West Ham United . The former Chelsea star flew into Stansted airport from Monaco today to meet Hammers officials and to undergo a medical. At the airport were Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp and chairman Daniel Levy. Gudjohnsen, 31, went for his medical at West Ham today, but will be having talks with Tottenham before making a final decision on his return to the Premier League.
