Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is ready to sacrifice Kieran Richardson in a bid to land Maynor Figueroa. Wigan have slapped a £7m fee on the 26-year-old Honduras left-back, which is above Bruce’s valuation. But Latics chief Roberto Martinez is an admirer of midfielder Richardson and an exchange deal is possible.

Jermaine Beckford is planning to walk out on Leeds this summer for Premier League Everton. Striker Beckford announced at the weekend that he had committed his “immediate future” to the League One leaders. And the 26-year-old, who netted a famous winner in Leeds’ FA Cup triumph at Manchester United earlier this month, has now withdrawn his transfer request. Beckford’s decision was a blow to Newcastle, who had bid for him in this transfer window.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has had a move for Manchester United’s England keeper Ben Foster rejected. The White Hart Lane chief is a big admirer of Foster and is desperately looking for a new keeper to challenge current first choice Heurelho Gomes. But United knocked back a discreet enquiry from Spurs for Foster, who needs to start getting regular games in the Premier League to stand a realistic chance of getting into Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad. Foster has been relegated to third choice at Old Trafford behind Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak and the England keeper could be ready to quit to preserve his international chances.

Tottenham Hotspur were last night in talks to sign Ruud Van Nistelrooy from Real Madrid on a free transfer. It is expected that a deal for the 33-year-old Dutch striker will be announced today. Van Nistelrooy is thought to have flown to London to discuss terms and undergo a medical which will hasten Tottenham Hotspur’s effort to move on Roman Pavlyuchenko in this transfer window. However, Spurs will only countenance a straight sale for the Russian international, who has been told he can leave, and have rejected a bid by Zenit St Petersburg to take the 28-year-old on loan for six months.

Barcelona are ready to offer Wayne Rooney £8m a season – after tax – to lure him from Manchester United. The Spanish and European champions have targeted the England striker for their main signing this summer. Barca’s manager Pep Guardiola has told his squad, including former United defender Gerard Pique, that the 24-year-old is his No.1 strike option. Rooney’s new contract negotiations are on hold until after the World Cup, when he will have two years left on his current Old Trafford deal.
