Alex McLeish is refusing to risk Birmingham City’s financial future but is willing to make Kenwyne Jones the club’s highest earner if he can lure him from Sunderland. Steve Bruce’s club, in turn, are in negotiations to sign Kevin Kurányi, the Germany forward. McLeish has been rebuffed in his attempts to sign Ryan Babel from Liverpool for £9 million and Aiden McGeady, the Celtic midfield player, and is unwilling to pay the minimum £11 million that Sunderland would seek for Jones, subject to them signing an adequate replacement.

Mick McCarthy has bid £3million for Hull winger Stephen Hunt. The Wolves boss wants the Republic of Ireland ace, 28, to boost his survival mission and rivals Hull are desperate to offload players to ease their wage bill. McCarthy will turn to Derby’s Kris Commons as a £750,000 fall-back option.

Liverpool are prepared to rival Arsenal in the pursuit of Marouane Chamakh as Rafael Benítez tries to capitalise on uncertainty surrounding the Bordeaux striker’s future with the offer of a pre-contract agreement at Anfield. Chamakh has been linked with Arsenal since last summer although Arsène Wenger is yet to make a firm offer for the Morocco international. Chamakh, who is out of contract with Bordeaux at the end of the season, is free to sign a pre-contract deal with a foreign club this month. Maxi Rodríguez is also on the verge of completing a £1.5m transfer from Atlético Madrid to Anfield.

Sol Campbell is set for a remarkable comeback with Arsenal. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger will offer Campbell a short term deal until the end of the season – as long as he can offload Philippe Senderos. Campbell has been training with Arsenal since quitting Notts County after his summer move to the League Two club turned sour. Wenger has been hugely impressed with the former England defender and is ready to do something he has done before – re-sign a former player.
