Wigan look to have won the race for Crystal Palace’s much-touted striker Victor Moses with a £2.5 million bid. Wigan manager Roberto Martinez and the prospect of Premier League football have apparently been enough to convince Moses to join Wigan rather than Championship suitors West Bromwich, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest. Palace manager Neil Warnock said: ‘I think it’s done. Victor is going to the Premier League and £2.5m is a snip for one of the best young players we’ve got.’

Manchester United will look to offload Michael Owen at the end of the season. The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle striker has failed to impress since moving to Old Trafford on a free transfer in the summer. And Sir Alex Ferguson will not stand in Owen’s way if he can find a club willing to offer him more playing opportunities. Owen has scored just seven goals in 26 appearances for United, although he has made just 10 starts.

Spurs will sell Robbie Keane to Sunderland for £9million. Keane only returned to Spurs from Liverpool 12 months ago but manager Harry Redknapp has wanted to sell him since last summer and has accepted the Black Cats’ offer. Black Cats boss Steve Bruce made his offer on Friday and saw it accepted after Spurs completed a deal to bring in Eidur Gudjohnsen on loan from Monaco. The Tottenham boss claimed earlier in the transfer window that he was not ready to let his captain leave White Hart Lane but changed his mind after signing Gudjohnsen from under the noses of rivals West Ham.

Celtic will show their faith in Tony Mowbray by allowing the manager to sign a central defender and a striker before the transfer window closes on Monday. Mowbray is six months into his time at Parkhead and after last night’s 2-1 home defeat by Hibernian his team are 10 points behind the Scottish Premier League leaders, Rangers. Those close to Mowbray say there is no prospect of him resigning but Celtic’s shortcomings in comparison to Rangers, whose financial problems have been well-publicised, will not have been lost on the club’s board of directors or the majority shareholder, Dermot Desmond. Mowbray is concentrating on transfer business. Preston North End’s Sean St Ledger is thought to be his main defensive target, with Celtic set to increase an initial offer of £2.5m for the Republic of Ireland player.

Newcastle United offered £1.5 million up front for Victor Moses, the Crystal Palace forward, last night, matching the bid made by West Bromwich Albion. Palace, who are in administration, are hoping to raise more for the 19-year-old, who has attracted interest from Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Manchester City. West Ham United have offered an initial £500,000 rising to about £2 million, but the deal is less attractive to Palace because they require significant funds this month.

Roberto Mancini leads the chasing pack for Johnson but may have to table a £9million bid for him before Monday’s transfer deadline. Gordon Strachan would let Johnson go for £9m but has told chairman Steve Gibson that any hopes of making an immediate return to the Premier League this season would be dashed without his top scorer.

Birmingham central defender Martin Taylor is in talks to join Newcastle on loan for the rest of the season. Taylor, 30, hasn’t played for Birmingham this term and has been given permission by manager Alex McLeish to speak to other clubs. Taylor has also had talks with Leicester, but they have pulled out of the race to sign him. The centre-half caused controversy in 2008 when his tackle on Eduardo saw the Arsenal striker suffer a broken leg and ankle. McLeish said: “Newcastle approached his people and said they would be interested in a loan deal.”
