Liverpool's move for Kenwyne Jones is set to include a clever tax break. Sunderland are in negotiations to sell their Trinidad & Tobago striker to the Anfield club in a £12million transfer. But Jones, 25, is likely to move on loan initially, ahead of a guaranteed permanent transfer in the summer. This enables both clubs to carry the impact of the transfer on their balance sheets into the next tax year which begins in April.

West Ham last night kicked off their new era with a £1.2m move for Benni McCarthy. It took just 24 hours for new owners David Gold and David Sullivan to make a bid for the Blackburn striker. The Hammers need cover up front because of Dean Ashton’s retirement and Carlton Cole’s injury. And Gold said: "Benni would be a good acquisition. It is possible - it’s just a question of whether we can do business."

Birmingham have been told to cough up £11million for Celtic’s Aiden McGeady. Brum, armed with a big transfer kitty from new owner Carson Yeung, have had an £8m offer for the winger rejected. But the Scottish giants have indicated they would be willing to sell their prized asset before the window shuts for a bumper fee. And Celtic have urged Birmingham’s Scottish boss Alex McLeish to return with an improved offer.

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson has made a move to sign out-of-favour Stoke striker James Beattie. Hodgson wants Beattie on loan for the rest of the season to ease his injury crisis at Craven Cottage and also give the ex-England striker a fresh start. Beattie had a dressing room bust-up with Stoke boss Tony Pulis at Arsenal two months ago and could now be offloaded, with Wolves and Blackburn also interested and monitoring developments. Hodgson is desperate for more strike power as Bobby Zamora is a target for West Ham and US midfielder Clint Dempsey is out for six weeks with knee ligament damage.

Bolton boss Owen Coyle wants to snap up Jamie O'Hara from Tottenham - but FIFA will have to rule on whether he can move this season. Coyle is rivalling Mick McCarthy's Wolves for the midfielder, who is back at Spurs but stuck in limbo because his loan spell at cash-strapped Portsmouth has ended. Tottenham are asking FIFA to let them sell O'Hara in the window - and join his third club of the season. Chairman Daniel Levy is waiting on a verdict before moving him out. The Premier League have passed on making a decision on O'Hara's unusual case, leaving FIFA to make the call about the midfielder's future.
