Owen Coyle has got the green light to make a January swoop for on-loan striker David Nugent. Burnley announced record losses of £11.7million for the past financial year but are determined to support the Scot in the transfer market. Portsmouth hitman Nugent, 24, has impressed during his loan spell at Turf Moor, even though he has scored just twice and not managed a goal since mid-September. His initial spell with the Clarets is due to expire in the New Year but the club are hopeful they can agree a permanent deal.

Tottenham want to sign Micah Richards in the January transfer window. The Manchester City defender is unhappy at Eastlands and, although he is fit, was nowhere near the squad that drew 2-2 with Liverpool at Anfield last weekend. Spurs are huge admirers of the 21-year-old right-back, who is understood to be aware of their interest. The north Londoners had a £5million bid for him turned down three years ago and Richards went on to sign a lucrative four-year deal with City, disappointing the likes of Chelsea, who were also interested.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is ready reject a move to Arsenal to rescue Liverpool’s season. The Real Madrid striker needs to play regular football to secure his place in Holland’s World Cup squad and is expected to be allowed to leave the Bernebau at Christmas. Rafa Benitez will not be allowed to spend his way out of Liverpool’s current crisis, so must raise any funds he wants to splash in the January transfer window – or make loan signings.
