Chelsea are weighing up an £8.6m swap deal for playmaker Andrea Pirlo that would send Claudio Pizarro and Michael Mancienne to AC Milan. Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti is a huge admirer of Italy midfielder Pirlo, 30, who led his country to glory at the 2006 World Cup. But the purse strings have been tightened at Stamford Bridge as owner Roman Abramovich bids to make the club more self-sufficient. That means Chelsea have been unable to splash big money on the one marquee signing Ancelotti wants.

Stephen Hunt is talking to Portsmouth over a £3.5m move after they agreed a one year deal with defender Steve Finnan. Reading have dropped their asking price for Hunt as Paul Hart attempts to bolster his squad following Peter Crouch’s depature. Hart is also talking to Cardiff striker Ross McCormack over a £3m deal but his interest in Croatia striker Nikola Kalinic could stall due to red tape.

Harry Redknapp is making a player-plus-cash £8million move for Hull City’s in-demand centre-half Michael Turner. The Spurs boss needs to fill a gaping hole in his back line and is willing to offer squad men plus cash for the towering defender, who is 6ft 4ins. Turner is also on the wish list of Liverpool, Fulham and Everton, but Redknapp is hoping he will be tempted by the chance of regular first-team football at White Hart Lane. He would let Hull boss Phil Brown have money and the choice of some of his reserves, including French right-back Pascal Chimbonda, as he tries to wheel and deal his way out of trouble.

Darren Bent was at the centre of a £15million tug-of-war last night. Stoke and Hull joined the battle for the Spurs striker as they matched Sunderland’s club-record bid. SunSport exclusively revealed yesterday that Bent was hauled off the plane taking Tottenham on their pre-season tour to China as his move to the Black Cats got a last-minute go-ahead. Talks with Stadium of Light boss Steve Bruce progressed yesterday and the hitman, 25, was due to have a medical today. But things got really complicated when Sunderland’s Premier League rivals Stoke and Hull launched their offers.

Stuttgart have made a £9million move for Middlesbrough striker Tuncay. The Turkey international has attracted interest from Aston Villa, Tottenham, Everton and Liverpool but the Bundesliga side are prepared to offer Middlesbrough’s asking price for the 27-year-old. Villa have offered £6m and Everton and Tottenham were looking at around £5m. The one thing in their favour is that Tuncay wants to stay in the Premier League. He has turned down interest from former club Fenerbahce but Stuttgart’s move will prove difficult to resist for all involved.

Joleon Lescott is set to join Kolo Toure at Manchester City as Mark Hughes’s spending spree continues. Toure is expected to complete a £14million switch from Arsenal in the next 24 hours, with Everton’s Lescott poised to join him. Hughes has tabled a £15m bid for Lescott, but with Everton sticking to their £20m valuation, the defender is prepared to make the next move to break the impasse. He is ready to tell David Moyes he wants to go to Eastlands in an attempt to drag the Everton boss back to the negotiating table.
