French Hitman In Fergie’s Sights

01st July 2009

Manchester United could turn to last season’s top scorer in the French League to give them firepower next season with Toulouse hitman Andre-Pierre Gignac, 23, in their sights. Blackburn have shown an interest in the £11m-rated striker, who took Ligue One by storm last term with 24 goals, but the lure of Old Trafford is likely to prove too strong. Lyon forward Karim Benzema tops United’s shopping list with the French club looking for a fee of around £35m. But Valencia striker David Villa may be too expensive at £40m and Franck Ribery of Bayern Munich looks to be heading to Real Madrid.

Wenger Turns Attention To Cana

01st July 2009

Arsenal target Felipe Melo has signed a one-year contract extension at Italian club Fiorentina tying him there until June 2013 – with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger switching his focus to Spurs target Marseille skipper Lorik Cana. Cana said: “The door remains open for a departure, even with three years remaining on my contract. I will talk with my family and my representatives. It will then depend on what I want to do. Of the possible destinations in the future, England and Germany are the two leagues that attract me the most.” Cana is a fans’ favourite at Marseille, but wants to show he can compete at the highest level. Defensive midfielder Melo, 25, who helped Brazil win the Confederations Cup in South Africa on Sunday, has been linked to the Gunners and Inter Milan.

Kiev Move To Bring Shevchenko Home

01st July 2009

Dynamo Kiev are hoping to bring Andriy Shevchenko back to the club from Chelsea. The Ukrainian has returned to the Blues for pre-season after a disappointing loan spell at AC Milan last term. The 32-year-old has struggled to make an impact at Chelsea since his big-money arrival from Milan in 2006 and he could be allowed to leave. Kiev club president Igor Surkis claims the club have made an offer to bring Shevchenko back to his first club and are waiting on the Premier League outfit’s response. “We are interested in Shevchenko. An offer has been made. We are waiting for a response,” said Surkis. “My heart and soul is open to him. Gazzaev has no objection to him joining the team. Andriy has to decide where he and his family would be comfortable.”
