Sol a shock target for United

Manchester United are ready to make a shock move for free agent Sol Campbell to boost their injury-hit defence. Former England centre-back Campbell, 35, has finally reached an exit agreement with League Two Notts County following his ill-fated move. And Premier League champions United have emerged as surprise suitors for the star’s signature next month. Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson would dearly love to get Campbell immediately as Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans and John O’Shea are all sidelined.

Everton eye Donovan

David Moyes hopes to strengthen his injury-plagued Everton squad in the January transfer window with a loan move for the USA forward, Landon Donovan. The 27-year-old, an international team-mate of the Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard, has been earmarked by Moyes as a possible addition to his attack for next month and an initial approach has been made to Donovan's club, Los Angeles Galaxy, regarding a temporary switch to the Premier League. Donovan was allowed to return to the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich in January of this year, having previously played for Bayer Leverkusen, and Everton hope a similar loan deal will be acceptable to the LA Galaxy following the end of their MLS season and ahead of next summer's World Cup.

Brum want permanent Hart deal

Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish wants to sign on-loan Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart on a permanent basis. McLeish has also stepped up his interest in his long-term target, Sporting Gijon midfielder, Michel. England international Hart, 22, is on a season-long loan at Birmingham. McLeish said: "Maybe we could come to some arrangement with Man City, if he continues to play to the level he’s playing at."
