AC Milan want David Beckham to return to the San Siro in January - and keep the former England skipper’s World Cup dream alive. Three Lions chief Fabio Capello reiterated last night that he needs Becks to be playing in a major European league throughout the winter to be considered for a place in the final 23 in South Africa. A spokesman for Beckham confirmed: "There is no deal yet but Milan have made it clear they would like David to return. At this stage it is still early in the negotiations between Milan and the Galaxy."

Bayern Munich stepped up their pursuit of Jose Bosingwa and urged Chelsea to keep their word over allowing him to join them for about £15million. The German giants dismissed claims Roman Abramovich was flying to Munich to try and sign Franck Ribery but insisted the Chelsea owner had agreed to discuss a deal for Bosingwa in the wake of Sunday's Community Shield success over Manchester United. General manager Uli Hoeness said: "We are still interested in Jose. We need a strong, experienced defender on the right side, especially if we use Ribery in a more offensive role, as is being considered. We want only Bosingwa and have no interest in any other player for this position."

Wolves are set to sign Michael Mancienne from Chelsea on a season-long loan. The young centre-back is due in Wolverhampton today on his return from England U-21 duty to finalise the agreement. And Wanderers boss Mick McCarthy expects to have Mancienne, 21, available for Saturday’s Premier League opener at home to West Ham. Mancienne, who did not make Chelsea’s squad for the Community Shield, has become available as Ricardo Carvalho is staying at Stamford Bridge.
