Giovani Alex dos Santos Ramirez made his name at the FIFA U-17 World Championships back in 2005 in Peru where he became the star of the show, claiming the Adidas Silver Ball Award as the second best player of the tournament behind Brazilian Anderson (Man Utd).
In 2006, dos Santos was invited on the pre-season tour of FC Barcelona's senior squad; during a friendly match on July 29, 2006 he scored in his senior team debut game against Danish club AGF Aarhus.Hugo Sanchez, the ex-manager of the Mexican national team at the time, called on him for the first time for exhibition games against Panama and in early September. He made his debut against Panama on September 9, 2007.
In just one season in the Spanish La Liga, dos Santos scored 15 goals in 28 appearance for the Catalonian outfit including a goal on his Champions League debut in the 3-0 home win against Lyon. He also memorably notched up a hat-trick in the 5-3 win over Real Murcia which was his last game for the club.
On 10 June 2008, dos Santos passed a medical and agreed terms to complete his move to Tottenham Hotspur from Barcelona. The transfer fee is initially 4.7 million, with the potential to rise to £8.6 million depending on appearances. The deal also includes a sell-on clause of 20% within dos Santos' first two years at Tottenham, and 10% thereafter.
