Irish international Graham Kavanagh joined Wigan Athletic in March 2005 from Cardiff City. He started his career at Home Farm before joining Middlesbrough in 1991, where he made infrequent appearances in his five year stay.
In 1996 he left to join Stoke City, and he helped them reach the Second Division play-offs for three years in a row, though they failed to win promotion on all three occasions. In 2001, Cardiff paid £1m for him and he proved to be a big hit at Ninian Park.
However, four years later, money trouble for Cardiff meant that he had to be sold to Wigan and he played an important role in the latter stages of their 2004/05 season, winning promotion to the Barclays Premiership.
His experience proved vital in the 2005/06 season, as he helped his side make a big impression in their first season of top-flight football with forty-two appearances.
However, in the summer of 2006, he joined Sunderland, where he has once again proved an important presence.
