Wigan Athletic boss Paul Jewell ended his search for a new striker by snapping up Leicester City's much-travelled forward David Connolly for an undisclosed transfer fee on the final day of the 2005 summer transfer window.

The 28-year-old Republic of Ireland international signed a three-year deal with the Latics after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.

"The move has all come about very quickly but I'm delighted to be playing in the Premiership at last," Connolly told the club's official website.

"It's a forward-thinking and ambitious club, with a great manager. When you look at what's been achieved here in such a short space of time it's an incredible story and I'm looking forward to playing my part in the adventure.

"As soon as I met with Paul Jewell I was impressed with him and with his vision for the club. He doesn't want Wigan just to make up the numbers or enjoy the ride.

"He wants the club to stay in this league and become a force in the division. He'll also push me and get the best out of me and at this stage of my career that's exactly what I need."

Connolly, who has played 40 times for his country, has scored 87 goals in 195 League starts for Watford, Feyenoord, Wolves, Wimbledon, West Ham and Leicester during an 11-year professional career.

During his first season at the JJB, Connolly played twenty-six times and scored seven goals, but moved to Sunderland in the summer of 2006, where he has become a huge success.

He will be hoping this fine form continues into 07/08 as the Black Cats bid to avoid relegation.
