Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy signed Waterford striker Daryl Murphy in a £100,000 deal in the summer of 2005.

The 22-year-old put pen to paper on a two-year deal after passing a medical at the Stadium of Light.

He was sent out on loan to Sheffield Wednesday in 2005 in order to gain more experience, but has since returned to play a vital part in the Black Cats promotion back to the top flight in the 2006/07 season.

He continued his fine form in 2007/08 and is one of Sunderland's most valuable players.
