Portsmouth signed Salif Diao on a season-long loan with the option to make the deal permanent on summer transfer deadline day.

The Senegal international struggled at Liverpool, finding himself out of the first-team picture at the club after returning from an injury-ravaged loan spell at Birmingham City.

However, Diao failed to make much impact at Portsmouth, and found himself back at Liverpool in the summer, without much hope of convincing Rafael Benitez to give him a chance in the first team at Anfield. In October 2006, he moved to Stoke City on a three-month loan deal which was made permanent shortly after.
