It was a day to remember for Gers fans Craig Blair and James McGimpsey as their mates joined them for a fantastic football experience at Ibrox courtesy of Carling. The guys had won the chance to take part in a full 90 minute game of football at the home of their heroes through a competition here on carling.com, and each was allowed to bring a squad of 16 guys to play.
The teams arrived at Ibrox to find ex-pros Derek Johnstone and Fraser Wishart there to manage the teams, and give them some expert advice on how to give a winning performance. Their team kit was named, numbered and waiting for them in the home and away dressing rooms, and a match photographer was on hand to capture all the action.
After the initial excitement of walking down the tunnel and out on to the famous Ibrox turf, it didn't take long for the two sides to settle into a competitive and enthralling match. Both teams started brightly yet it was the home side, Cumbernauld Clyde AFC, who broke the deadlock when Stuart Carslaw broke the offside trap and slid it past the onrushing 'keeper Derek Baxter. The home side looked to build on this early lead but despite breaching the Linwood FC defence on a number of occasions, a string of excellent saves from Baxter kept the score at 1-0. Having weathered the storm, Linwood FC came back into the match with some good possession which resulted in their equaliser. The away side's John Hay lived up to the expectations of any number 9 by getting on the end of a neat through-ball before opening his body up to curl the ball into the corner of the net, 1-1.
Unfortunately for the away side, they failed to build on Hay's equaliser and Cumbernauld Clyde AFC began to dominate possession creating a number of good chances. Baxter in the Linwood FC goal continued his fine form but was unable to prevent Blair McClymont poking home a rebounded shot before a second from Carslaw left the half-time score at 3-1.
The second half started as the first had ended with Cumbernauld Clyde AFC creating the bulk of the chances and continuing their fine defensive performance, due in no small part to centre half Alan Duncan who was outstanding all afternoon. Indeed, despite some encouraging possession and neat touches from the Linwood FC midfield, as the teams began to tire Cumbernauld Clyde AFC put the game beyond doubt with goals from Billy Millar, Derek O'Neil, a second from Blair McClymont, and a third from Carslaw to complete his hat-trick which gave the home side a convincing 7-1 victory.
Winning manager Derek Johnstone said: "It was a great performance from my side today and had it not been for their 'keeper we could have got a few more. I'm not sure there was such a big difference between the teams but we were very strong at the back and gave very little away all afternoon."
Fraser Wishart, away team manager said: "It's disappointing to lose by the number of goals we did because I felt we played better than that. They had a lot of pace up front which caused us a few problems and in Alan Duncan they had a defender who read the game very well. Nevertheless, all the lads seemed to enjoy their experience and can be happy with their efforts today."
Each manager picked a Carling Man of the Match from their team with Derek Johnstone picking out defender Alan Duncan, and Fraser Wishart choosing 'keeper Derek Baxter. Rangers midfielder Maurice Edu stopped by to meet the guys and hand over the medals and winners trophy. He said: "I think it's great that Carling give our fans the chance to play on this fantastic pitch. Anyone who's played at Ibrox will tell you that it's an amazing stadium and I'm sure all the guys have had a great day."
