Hermann Hreidarsson

Iceland international Hermann Hreidarsson completed a £900,000 move from Ipswich to Charlton in March 2003. However, because he was moving outside of the transfer window (to help ease the Tractor Boys' financial difficulties) he wasn't eligable to play for the Addicks until the start of the 2003/04 season.

Hreidarsson has cost Charlton an initial £800,000, with the remaining amount to follow if they retain their Premiership place at the end of next season.

The 6ft 3in defender cost Ipswich a club record fee of £4.5million in 2000 and missed only two games for Town during their two-season stay in the top flight.

He had become Ipswich's record signing when he joined on the eve of their return to the Premiership, smashing the £2.5m fee paid for Marcus Stewart during the previous campaign. He had previously spent time in London with Crystal Palace and Wimbledon, also being relegated with these clubs.

His first season at The Valley was a success, as he scored two goals in 35 appearances. One of the goals came in Charlton's infamous 4-2 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, something which is sure to have earned him a place in the supporters' hearts for years to come.

He stayed in their affections in the 2004/05 season after a series of brilliant performances. He made a total of 39 appearances and scored twice. However, his season was brought to a premature end in April after a knee injury suffered in a goalles draw at Aston Villa left him on the sidelines.

He continued his fine form for his country, playing 7 games, including a famous 2-0 friendly victory against Italy and proved just as dependable for Charlton in 2005/06, playing forty-two games.

Another superb season followed in 2006/07, but once the Addicks were relegated, Hreidarsson decided to move on and joined Portsmouth in May 2007.
