David Nugent

David Nugent grew up on Merseyside and started his career with Liverpool's youth academy before being released and joining Bury, where he gradually worked his way up the ranks before hitting form in the 2004/05 season, attracting the attention of Preston North End, who snapped him up.

In 2006/07 he was firing on all cylinders again, even earning himself a first England cap and scoring on his debut against Andorra (albeit from 30cm off the goal-line) while grabbing plenty of goals for Preston. After they failed to win promotion to the Premier League it was always likely that he would leave and in July 2007 he joined Portsmouth for £6m.

However, his first season at Fratton Park was a poor one as he struggled to find a regular place in Harry Redknapp's team.
