David Edgar

Canadian youngster David Edgar is one of several Academy products who have been given their chance to shine at St James' Park this season.

Edgar, whose father Eddie played one game for the Magpies in the mid-1970s, joined the club's Academy side as a 13-year old. He could have joined Manchester United having had a trial at Old Trafford as a nine-year old, but decided to remain in Canada rather than move to England at such an early age.

Like fellow Academy product Paul Huntington, Edgar's big chance at St James' Park came in December 2006 due to an injury crisis at the club. He made his debut in a 2-1 defeat against Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium but just over a week later he made a dream home debut, scoring Newcastle's second goal and equaliser in the 2-2 draw against Manchester united, with his Dad looking on from the stands.

He will now be looking to establish himself as a regular in the Newcastle United first-team squad as well as progress from U-20 to full international honours for Canada.
