Steve McClaren made a late move to strengthen Middlesbrough's squad by signing Brazil midfielder Fabio Rochemback on transfer deadline day.

Rochemback was a long-term target for McClaren and joined Boro for an undisclosed fee after they finally managed to negotiate a complicated deal with Barcelona and Sporting Lisbon.

The 23-year-old was nominally a Barcelona player, but had been on loan at Sporting since 2003 and Boro had to agree terms with both clubs for the move to go ahead.

The 2005/06 proved a superb one for Rochemback as he scored three goals in 37 games.

He struggled somewhat in the following campaign, but he is an important and experienced figure in a youthful Middlesbrough squad.
