Young winger Adam Johnson made his debut for Middlesbrough in an away leg defeat in the UEFA Cup at Sporting Lisbon, though showed no signs of being overwhelmed by the occasion.

Johnson was then called upon again in September 2005 when Arsenal came to The Riverside and he was again one of the star players for Middlesbrough in their 2-1 win over the Gunners.

He finished the 2005/06 season with eighteen games and one goal to his name and continued this fine form in 06/07.
