Middlesbrough are being linked with a double swoop for Austrian striker Roland Linz and Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Linz is currently with Portuguese side Braga, but reports suggest Boro have sent scouts to watch the 26-year-old on three occasions this season.
Linz has fuelled the speculation by saying: "I know that some foreign clubs are watching my matches.
"I am happy because I want to help Braga and to prepare for the European Championships.
"Those are my dreams now, but an exit in the summer? It is possible if an interesting offer arrives for all concerned.
"I have friends in England and the Premier League is a spectacle."
Meanwhile, Jaaskelainen is out of contract at the Reebok Stadium in the summer and could move to Teesside as Mark Schwarzer seems certain to be heading for pastures new.
"We've had one round of talks with Bolton and that was some 12 months ago. Since then we've heard nothing," said the goalkeeper's agent, Peter Harrison.
"There are several clubs showing an interest and we'd expect a deal to be tied up soon."
