After months of rumours Manchester United agreed a deal with Sporting to sign Luis Carlos Almeida da Cunha, aka Nani, and add another talented Portuguese winger to their squad.

With Cristiano Ronaldo a key player in their 2007 Premiership win Sir Alex Ferguson perhaps thought that you couldn't get too much of a good thing. Certainly, the comparisons with Ronaldo will dominate the early part of his career at Old Trafford.

Like Ronaldo Nani was brought up on an island belonging to Portugal (Cape Verde in Nani's case. Madeira in Ronaldo's) and like Ronaldo he impressed at Sporting before Manchester United came in with a big money deal.

His first season at Old Trafford proved an impressive one, but Nani struggled to build on that in 2008/09, finding himself confined to mostly cup appearances, and unable to consistently impress when given the chance in bigger matches.
