Young left-back Fabio da Silva began his career with Brazilian club Fluminese. He was spotted by United's former Academy manager Les Kershaw in 2005 and signed for the club in 2008.

While his brother Rafael made great strides in the first team in 2008/09, Fabio's progress was held up by a couple of lengthy injuries, though he impressed when fit enough to get on the pitch in a couple of FA Cup games.
