Kasper Schmeichel is the son of legendary Danish goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, best known for his performances in a Manchester United shirt, though he finished his career across the city with the Blue half of Manchester.
He retired from the game in the summer of 2003, but their squad was not without a Schmeichel for long, as his son Kasper came through the ranks and established himself as a bright prospect for the future.
In late November 2003, with David Seaman and Nicky Weaver both injured, Schmeichel made his first appearance on the bench supporting fellow young goalkeeper Kevin Stuhr-Ellegaard.
Schmeichel has remained part of the Manchester City set-up following Stuart Pearce's promotion to manager of the club. With David James as No.1 and Nicky Weaver, returned from injury, as backup, he was sent on loan to Darlington and then to Bury in early 2006 to gain more experience.
In August 2007, he made his debut for Manchester City under Sven Goran Eriksson, and enjoyed a brief run in the first team before falling behind Joe Hart in the pecking order. Loan spells at Cardiff and Coventry City followed, with Schmeichel's future at City looking bleak.
