Martin Skrtel

Slovakian defender Martin Skrtel began his career playing for local side Trencin before moving to Zenit St Petersburg in 2004, quickly establishing himself for the Russian side and the Slovakian national team.

He began to attract interest from many top European sides before eventually moving to Liverpool in January 2008.

He made a shaky start to life at Anfield with a nervy display in an FA Cup clash with minnows Havant and Waterlooville, but soon established himself with a series of tough-tackling performances.

In his first full season, Skrtel kept Daniel Agger out of the team after coming in for the injured Dane.
