In January 2007, Liverpool confirmed the capture of Argentina defender Emiliano Insua on an 18-month loan deal from Boca Juniors.

The 17-year-old left-back had represented Argentina at Under-20 level and was picked in the 20-man squad for the 2007 South American Youth Championship in Paraguay.

Although he only played sporadically for the Reds during his loan period, he impressed Rafa Benitez and was handed a permanent move in the summer of 2008.

Injuries to Fabio Aurelio saw Insua get a run in the team in 2008/09, and his raiding runs down the flank gave Liverpool an option they have rarely had in Benitez's time at the club. However, his participation in the 2009 South American Youth Championship held up his progress.
