Former Liverpool winger Harry Kewell has completed his move to Galatasaray after signing a two-year contract with the Turkish champions.

Kewell, 29, left Anfield last month after being told he would not be offered a fresh contract and had been linked with moves to Portsmouth and Fulham.

But the Australia international, whose time on Merseyside was ravaged by injury which limited him to little over 100 games during five seasons, has now officially joined Galatasaray.

The move has already been criticised by supporters of Kewell's former side as he was in the Leeds United team whose UEFA Cup semi-final defeat in 2000 was overshadowed by the stabbing to death of two travelling fans in Istanbul.

"I'm excited, I'm thrilled to bits. I'm looking forward to the new challenge," he told the club's official website.

"I can't wait to meet up with the team and to get going. It's something different.

"There's a lot of talk about the Turkish league. It's coming up in the world and the national team has done well in the last couple of major tournaments.

"There's a lot of young talent here and it's different, that's what I'm looking forward to - a new challenge."
