George Boateng was born in Ghana but began his football career in Holland with Excelsior Rotterdam, moving on to neighbours Feyenoord in 1995. After three years he moved to England to sign for Coventry City, quickly establishing himself in the Premier League.
After his first season, he moved to Aston Villa for £4.5m and again impressed in his trademark defensive midfield role, until a bust-up with manager Graham Taylor led to him leaving Villa Park in 2002 to sign for Middlesbrough.
He made a handful of appearances for adopted country Holland at international level and went on to briefly become captain of Middlesbrough under Gareth Southgate. However, in July 2008 he left the Riverside to join newly-promoted Hull City.
His first season at the club was an impressive one and he finished the campaign with 23 appearances to his name.
