In January 2007, Wigan Athletic clinched the capture of Chesterfield striker Caleb Folan for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £500,000.
The 24-year-old signed a deal running until the summer of 2010 with the Latics, who beat off interest from a number of other clubs to snare the former Leeds United youngster.
Folan netted 12 goals in the first half of the season for the Spireites, including efforts in Carling Cup ties against Manchester City, West Ham United and Charlton Athletic.
He continued this fine form in his first half-season with Wigan Athletic as he scored two goals in 13 games.
However, after Jewell left the club for a break from football, Folan was sold to Hull City. He continued his fine form for the Tigers and helped them to promotion in 2007/08. He then scored the decisive goal in a 2-1 victory over Fulham on the opening day of the 2008/09 season. He didn't score again in that campaign though and was sent off in a league match against Liverpool in April 2009.
